Special - Free Resume Distribution
to Recruiters
We've actually found a great service that has currently gone free. They are testing an advertising model to pay the bills, so it isn't clear if this service will remain free. When talked to the owners in January, they are committed to giving the new model a few more months before reassessing.
Most people pay anywhere between $50 to $1,000 for a resume distribution service. Yes, some services like Kennedy that try to cater to executives would like to charge $1,000, and they should never get it because most services actually deliver to pretty much the same list of recruiters.
The problem with ALL paid services is that they limit your distribution by industry and by geography. if you are generally interested in a job anywhere in the US, you won't be able to submit your resume to each geographical location without racking up a pretty large distribution bill.
A nice benefit about this service is that it doesn't limit you the way that paid services do. It's a testament to the power of leveraging the Internet to offer electronic distribution. So, if you decide to use this service and you like the results, consider a small donation to them.
A resume 'blast' like this is a good way to jump start your search, and get your resume in the hands of recruiters. This process works and while these guys may not have all the bells and whistles of the paid for services, they offer the one benefit that really counts, they don't limit your distribution by geography or by industry. A good recruiter or head hunter can make introductions for you that might take you months to break into.
VERY IMPORTANT NOTE:
DO NOT SUBMIT DIRECTLY TO COMPANIES
A lot of resume distribution services offer distribution directly to companies. When your resume is on file with the HR department, a recruiter can NOT make an introduction to anyone within the company. When it comes to getting introduced to hiring managers, you are much better off using a recruiter or other method outlined on this site than to ever go through HR. HR departments are notoriously understaffed, and as a result, great resumes usually end up gathering dust.
We will recommend this free resume distribution service until it is no longer free and then we will reassess our recommendation.
When you do identify a specific position with a company that you are very interested in, you must no send your resume to HR. You must get your resume into the hands of the hiring mangers directly. And we will discuss that next.
