I don’t know when I first thought I wanted to be a Seattle DUI attorney. There was no aha moment. No light bulb went on. But the more I looked into it, the more I thought it might be the right place for me. Here are just a couple of reasons you might want to be a Seattle DUI lawyer.

You can’t fear anything. There are a lot of unknowns in DUI law. Cops are going to lie. You might have a bad client. But you have to have the guts to cue your case up for trial, throw caution to the wind, and dive in head first if the situation calls for it. A good DUI attorney has guts.

A competitive spirit. When I was young I’d play in basketball games. Sometimes I had the better team. Sometimes I didn’t. But I always went into every game and gave it my all. If we were small and quick we adjusted to win. If we were large and slow, we adjusted. But we always went into it to win, not just to put in a good showing. That has to be your mindset as a Seattle DUI lawyer.

The underdog mentality. If you like the easy road, if you like to play the front runner, then you need to go be a prosecutor. Seattle DUI attorneys rarely, if ever, have the advantage in any aspect of the case (at least at the beginning). There is no standard of reasonable doubt (in breath test cases), there is usually a lot of evidence against you, and jurors don’t like to let drunk drivers go free. But you have to fight the good fight. You have to know that underdogs can win.

Compassionate. We all know drunk drivers are bad. But most of my clients weren’t pulled over for drunk driving. They were pulled over for speeding, or failing to use their turn signal, or having a license plate light out. It was only after they were stopped that some overzealous cop began a DUI investigation that spiraled out of control.

Being a Seattle DUI attorney has some good aspects and bad aspects. There is the potential to make some money, but don’t get into it for the money. If you enjoy demonstrating some of the above qualities, maybe Seattle DUI defense is for you.
